Topic 1: Compare performance against established benchmarks (e.g., gap analysis)

Understanding Benchmark, Performance and Gap Analysis

If you look at the title of this topic, it mainly revolves around three important words:

  1. Benchmark
  2. Performance
  3. Gap

Understanding these three terms will make this topic very easy to understand.

Now question comes
What is benchmark?

General perspective: Comparing your HSE performance with the Best to become better.

From an HSE perspective, benchmarking means comparing your organization's HSE performance with an established standard, target, industry best practice, or the performance of other organizations to identify opportunities for improvement.

Let's understand with general perspective as we know this topic revolves around three words

Benchmark: what you want to achieve or where you want to be?
Performance: what have you achieved or where are you now?
Gap: what is still left to be achieved?

Let's Understand with a Simple Example

Imagine you are a fitness enthusiast and you have set a goal to run 20 km every day.

However, due to some reason, you were able to run only 5 km today.

So:

  • Benchmark/Target = 20 km
  • Actual Performance = 5 km
  • Gap = 20 − 5 = 15 km

Therefore, your performance is 15 km below your target.

This 15 km difference is your performance gap.

But how Gap comes

Gap = Benchmark - Actual/Current Performance

Now Apply the Same Concept to HSE

Suppose your company has established a target to conduct 30 HSE training sessions every month.

At the end of the month, you conducted only 17 training sessions.

Now compare the target with the actual performance:

ElementResult
Benchmark/Target30 trainings
Actual Performance17 trainings
Gap13 trainings

Calculation:

Gap = Benchmark − Performance

Gap = 30 − 17

Gap = 13 trainings

Therefore, the organization has a gap of 13 training sessions.

Why is Gap Analysis Important in HSE?

Gap analysis helps an HSE professional understand where the organization currently stands compared with where it wants to be.

Once the gap is identified, you can investigate:

Why does the gap exist?

For example:

Lack of manpower

Lack of training resources

Poor planning

Insufficient management support

Lack of employee participation

Inadequate supervision

Resource constraints

Or more

After identifying the reason, corrective actions can be developed to close the gap and improve HSE performance.
